Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, a seasoned Malaysian politician who has led the state since May 2018, has praised Barisan Nasional (BN) for its significant role in promoting political stability. Chow, a key leader in the Democratic Action Party (DAP) and part of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition, highlighted the successful partnership between PH and BN as a cornerstone of effective governance.
During Penang MIC’s Deepavali open house, Chow acknowledged BN’s valuable contributions, particularly during the 2023 state elections. He specifically recognized the efforts of BN component parties, including MIC, for supporting his administration in driving initiatives that benefit the people of Penang.
“Political stability is essential for any government to perform its duties effectively. Thanks to this collaboration, we’ve been able to focus on social and economic growth, improving the lives of our citizens,” Chow remarked.
He further emphasized the strength of the unity government formed through the collaboration of PH, BN, and other allied parties, crediting Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for inspiring confidence in both local and international stakeholders.
Chow also lauded the leadership of Penang BN and Umno chief Musa Sheikh Fadzir, whose efforts have helped solidify ties between BN and PH. “The results of the 2023 state elections stand as a testament to the power of cooperation. Our unity has paved the way for remarkable achievements,” he added.
In the 40-seat state assembly, PH-BN secured 29 seats, while Perikatan Nasional (PN) claimed 11. DAP achieved a clean sweep of all 19 seats it contested, PKR won seven out of 13, and Amanah retained one of its two seats. Meanwhile, BN managed to win two of the six seats it contested, with Sungai Acheh assemblyman Rashidi Zinol joining Chow’s state executive council.
Looking ahead, Chow stressed the importance of strengthening this collaborative spirit to tackle future challenges, including the upcoming general election in three years.
Reflecting on the Deepavali celebration, Chow expressed gratitude for being part of Penang MIC’s first event of its kind in 15 years. In a heartwarming moment, state MIC chief J Dhinagaran and party members surprised Chow with a flower garland to commemorate his 65th birthday, which he celebrated the previous day.
DAP chairman and former Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng also attended the event, symbolizing a shared commitment to unity and progress for Penang.
